Mikey Havoc

aka Michael Roberts

Music has been central to the long, varied career of Mikey Havoc. His decades in the public eye have included singing in chart-topping band Push Push, fronting his own TV show (often with Jeremy Wells aka Newsboy), helping run Squid – one of the coolest bars in Auckland – DJing huge dance events, and three stints as breakfast host on bFM.

Mikey Havoc (Michael Roberts) traces his love of music to the first year of high school when he started buying cassettes, which led to him and his cousin Ken Green becoming obsessed with heavy metal. He convinced his mother to buy him a guitar, an amp, and a distortion pedal, but guitar lessons didn’t get him very far (nor did an attempt at drums). Yet by fifth form (Year 11), he’d still managed to start his first band.

Trivia:

In 2002, Havoc appeared in Auckland Theatre Company’s production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He hadn’t sung in a theatre show since high school, though as a teen his powerful voice had shone through in his school musicals and this had led to him being picked to perform a song from Phantom of the Opera at the Entertainer of the Year Awards.
