Hastings has made just as significant a contribution to New Zealand music as its Hawke’s Bay rival, Napier, 18km north. The influence of Ngāti Kahungunu remains strong; Hastings Boys’ High School nurtured idiosyncratic talents that were crucial to pop history; the Tomoana Showgrounds saw the live debut of a legendary song; and the rural hamlet of Te Awanga fostered an international influencer.
