Intro/ Verse

‘Sitting Inside My Head’ opens with the bass guitar and vocals, establishing a D#m chord as the tonic. The guitar and drums enter at the fifth bar when the pattern repeats. The guitar plays a syncopated rhythm, using strings muted with the fretting hand to create a funky rhythm in what is otherwise a rock song.  A verse intro is created after the first chorus by adding in the organ and brass section. In the third verse, the vocals become more intense, going up in pitch and getting more strained in timbre, while the horn section and guitars add some improvised embellishments as the bass drops out.

Chorus

The chorus also uses the same basic chords as the verse, however it changes the rhythm and uses VII - I as a cadence, which is a fairly common cadence in minor keys in rock music (for example, ‘Phlex’ by Blindspott). The bass guitar plays some lead breaks/fills high up the neck in the spaces created by the downwards glissando on the electric guitar when it slides down the neck and briefly stops.

Outro

The outro begins with the intro being used again, stripping the song back to the bass guitar and vocals, including repeating the first verse. The rest of the band then re-enters with the repeated line “I’m thinking about you” (which is echoed with backing vocals, until the fade out.)
